Betty & Bert & a Biscuit

Transcript: Bert and Betty Bircher in interview Peter Filby, 3BO (August 1993)

Betty: …Well, it all started back when the kids were still young, and Karen…
Bert: Karen’s our eldest…
Betty: …Oh yes, our eldest. Well, Karen was running around the kitchen table…
Bert: Oh, yes she was. She was mad for running back then…
Betty: Yes, yes she was love…
Bert: …And Betty just, well she just had stopped.
Betty: Yes I did I stopped – I don’t really remember it…
Bert: You don’t do you love…
Betty: No. But Bert has filled me in. But, go on love…
Bert: There was this big pack – you know the Arnott’s Family Assortment…
Betty: Yes it was, you’re right there Bert. Big.
Bert: …Sitting on the table, and Betty was in her chair, not moving, staring at it and muttering. It was very strange. I thought she was having a bit of a turn,
Betty: You got a bit of fright didn’t you love…
Bert: Yes I must admit love I did. But, after a couple of minutes she came to, and announced that she’d had a sort of – well, a sort of a vision.
Betty: Yes – yes it was really. I call it a “flash”.
Bert: So, I made her a cuppa – and…You tell the rest love…
Betty: You sure love?
Bert: Yes yes love. It’s your vision love – go on.
Betty: Well, I told Bert that Karen was an Iced Vovo. It didn’t really make sense at first.
Bert: And I started to keep a bit of an eye on the sherry…
Betty: (laughing) Oh you did love didn’t you! Thought I was having a midday tipple and it was sending me off!
(Much laughter shared between them)
Betty: But after that – Well, let’s just say that was the beginning
Bert: Yes after that she was having “flashes” all the time.
Betty: I was. And all started from there, and then I began to give Biscuit Readings at the church fete.
Bert: And the primary school fete…
Betty: Oh yes, all sorts of interesting places. And well, it just went on from there
Bert: It snowballed, didn’t love
Betty: Yes love – snowballed. And since then, Biscuit Divination – or “reading” as I prefer…
Bert: …She thinks “divination” sounds a bit too fancy…
Betty: Well it does love. Since then it’s just grown and grown and Bert & I have travelled Australia wide…
Bert: …In the campervan
Betty: Yes, in the campervan – Giving Biscuits…
Bert: …and a bit of tea & sympathy…
Betty: …to everyone.
